Michelle's News - July 2023

Did you see June?

It went by so fast; I blinked and nearly missed it….

Since the last bulletin, we have hosted a seminar from the Society’s patron MARSH JLT Speciality on Partner Oversight and Supervision. This was a very informative seminar and everyone that attended walked away with huge nuggets of information on compliance. We will be hosting another session in the autumn, with MARSH, so please do join us.  Thank you to KCH Garden Square for providing excellent facilities and a tasty buffet lunch!

On Friday 16th June, I was invited to attend Hampshire Law Society’s Annual Awards, in Southampton. It was an honour to represent the Society and to see in person how other societies are working.

It was also great to meet up with Mandy Heath, from Bournemouth and District Law Society, I first met Mandy at the Legal Opening in October and it wouldn’t be a dinner without The Law Society President, Lubna Shuja

On behalf of the Society, I will be presenting at The Law Society Online Conference in September. The workshop will be focusing on marketing and how important it is to be noticed on the social media platforms.

In the last few weeks, I have visited member firm, Cleggs Solicitors. This was an excellent meeting with Jane Burton, Catherine Pope, Trudy Holder, Danielle Marshall, Lisa Shambrook and Ben Burton. Together we discussed the activities of Nottinghamshire Law Society and how they could become more involved on sub-committees and present at events.  Danielle Marshall and Lisa Shambrook have now become members of the ever-growing Property Committee, which is now chaired by Joshua Morley.

Another new face on Council since the AGM is Aldijana Hoad, who now sits in the role as Sole Practitioner Representative. This month’s bulletin features a blog from Aldijana, on how she wants to help sole practitioners in Nottinghamshire. Participate in the quick survey too!

On Wednesday 5th July, I represented the Society at Nelson’s 40th birthday celebrations. This was a great opportunity to meet Nelson’s Chairman Tim Hastings and thank him for their support as a firm and members participation at events, sport and the Nottinghamshire Junior Lawyers Division.

On Thursday 6th July, the sun shone on Adbolton Lane for the first cricket game of the summer. Huge thank you to everyone that took part in the game, captained by Aaron Singh. Unfortunately, we were beaten to of the Wheelhouse Trophy this year but, we will be back to challenge the ON Phoenix XI team next year. For all the images and match report, visit Wheelhouse Cup 2023.

Finally, we hosted the second networking lunch in Newark this year, with members meeting the new President Stephen Luke. Ann Et Vin were excellent hosts with a lunch of cheese, pate, and wine!

We will be scheduling more networking lunches across the county in the autumn, so please watch out for the mailings and social media comms!

The lunches are relaxed and informal not to mention the perfect opportunity to step out and meet your fellow legal professionals in Nottinghamshire.

Membership card emails have been pinging their way into your inboxes, don't forget to take up the challenge, login to your membership profile update your avatar and enter the Prize Draw before 30th July, by simply emailing me with the words 'Accepted the Challenge'!

This is the last bulletin for the summer, and you will see there are many events planned for the autumn. We would love to see you at one of them and if you have any suggestions for events or sporting activities, then please get in touch. In fact, you may notice an advert for members to join a Social and Sport Committee. If you are interested, please email us!

In the meantime, have a fantastic summer and we will see you in September!

Best wishes,

Michelle Foster
