Spotlight on Vice President - Drew Dennis "Drews News" (November 2025)

We are now fully in the run-up to Christmas, and the events just keep on coming! Over the past few weeks, I’ve attended the following events on behalf of Nottinghamshire Law Society: -

National Justice Museum

On 8 October 2025, I attended the National Justice Museum’s 30th anniversary celebration to mark the continuing success of one of our city’s key museums. Congratulations to all the brilliant people who make the museum such a huge success and provide unrivalled educational services to countless young people, both around the county and beyond.

It was wonderful to see the great and the good of the Nottinghamshire professional community out in force - here's to the next 30 years!

Cocktails and Competitions

I hosted the "Cocktails and Competitions" event at Revolucion de Cuba on 9 October, which was a brilliant event designed to promote awareness of our three unique competitions for junior lawyers. The event went brilliantly, and it was hugely inspiring to see so many fresh faces who want to get involved. I can't wait to hear about all the nominations! Thanks, as ever, to Michelle for her organisational genius and to Naomi De Silva, Jane Jarman and Jane Ching for their speeches. We certainly couldn't have done it without you.

Midlands Asian Lawyers Association Ball

Rounding off a busy week, on 10 October, I attended the spectacular MALA - Midlands Asian Lawyers Association ball at Athena in Leicester on behalf of the Society.

These events are always a spectacle, and this year was no exception! The food was stunning, the entertainment spectacular and the company more so! It's just a shame roadworks meant it took two hours to get home but you can’t have everything!

Black at the Bar Event – University of Nottingham

On 15 October, I went back to school by attending the University of Nottingham Bar Society's panel discussion entitled "Black at the Bar" in collaboration with St Ives Chambers. It was great to be back where it all began for me, somewhat older though not necessarily wiser! I've no doubt all involved left the event thoroughly inspired!

Legal Futures: New Professionals Reception 2025

I was delighted to attend the Society’s Legal Futures event on 22 October at the National Justice Museum, which was held to celebrate our new trainees and pupils across the region. I remember how hard I had to work and what sacrifices I made to get the “golden ticket” of a training contract, so your achievements cannot be underestimated. Huge congratulations to all concerned and good luck with the rest of your legal journey!

Law Society Panel Event

On 29 October, I was delighted to return to Nottingham Law School to sit on a panel of representatives from the Society (and the NJLD) at an event designed to (hopefully) inspire our next generation of solicitors and barristers.

In my head, it really doesn’t seem that long ago that I was a bright-eyed student, wistfully speculating on how my career would turn out, however, in reality, it has been a lifetime! I would hope that, between us, we gave as much advice as we could and that we proved useful.

I certainly went home inspired, reinvigorated by hearing the exceptional advice of my friends and colleagues, as well as the enthusiasm of the students. I only hope the students felt the same way!

CEO Sleepout 2025

Finally, last Thursday (6 November), I attended the CEO Sleepout 2025 at Notts County’s Meadow Lane stadium with other members of the business community on behalf of the society.

It wasn't the most pleasant night's sleep I've ever had, but that is entirely insignificant given the hardship those enduring homelessness face on a daily basis. Despite the fact we are in 2025, so many still face such poverty and have absolutely no choice in the matter, which is hugely upsetting. Every penny raised is designed to help those who need it most. Hopefully some awareness and much needed funds have been raised for an incredibly worthwhile cause.

It's not long til Christmas and a bit of a break – we can do it!
