President's Blog - July 2025

Well, summer is well and truly upon us, and I hope everyone has been enjoying the warm weather!

We had a fantastic turnout for the Legal Walk, raising much needed funds for the Nottingham Law Centre. The Centre provides an incredible service to those on the fringes of society; people who simply cannot afford the legal advice they need. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and donated. We also captured some lovely video footage from the day, which we’ll be sharing with you all soon.

Looking ahead, Michelle has organised what promises to be a brilliant evening at the Trent Navigation on 26th September, featuring an ABBA tribute band and some delicious-sounding food. I suspect tickets will sell out quickly, so be sure to get yours while you can!

At Richard Nelson LLP, we recently held our annual training day. It started with a firm-wide social (also at the Trent Navigation—so I can personally vouch for the great food!) followed by a day of training. The main goal was to bring everyone together informally, away from day-to-day pressures. It reminded me just how important strong, positive workplace culture is, and how valuable it is to simply spend time together. That same spirit of community and connection is something I’m keen to foster throughout my year as President of the Society.

In that vein, I also hosted my first informal get-together at Cooper in town which was simply a relaxed after-work drink, designed as an easy drop-in event for members to come along solo or with colleagues. We were a small but perfectly formed group, and some of us even went on for dinner afterwards. It was lovely to see new friendships being made and old ones strengthened. I’m really keen to build on this and create more opportunities for members to connect casually and meaningfully.

As for the month ahead: I have a much-needed week off, which I’ll be spending firmly stationed between the pool and the bar, doing as little as possible! Later in July, I’ll also be attending Nottingham Pride for the first time. Further into the bulletin, you’ll find a thoughtful and insightful piece from our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee on Pride and what it represents and why it’s important.

Wishing you all a restful and joyful summer - do take time to connect, unwind, and enjoy all the good things the season has to offer.
