Another month flies by and October was busy with events, productive meetings and even a bit of sport.
In my role of event planning, I was invited to visit the hallowed ground of Nottingham Forest and view all their event space. The tour was brilliant, taking in the museum and newly furnished event spaces including the impressive hospitality suite! Watch this space for an event being planned at the ground in the future!
Birmingham saw the autumn luncheon of local law societies getting together to discuss everything from events, membership and promotional tips. These meetings are so productive and the support we give to each other is immeasurable. If we could bottle up the enthusiasm, positivity, inspiration, energy and passion that was shared that afternoon, it would be priceless!
The National Justice Museum opened its doors to the New Trainee Solicitors and Pupil Barristers reception. A fabulous evening where we were joined by our distinguished Judiciary guests, HHJ Coupland, HHJ Watson, HHJ Sadiq and HHJ Owen. The reception is an excellent example of seeing our new legals begin to make their connections at the start of their legal career.
On Wednesday 23rd October, we welcomed The Law Society to Nottingham, with a panel event discussing the Budget and how it will affect the Private Client sector. A huge thank you to Freeths LLP for hosting the evening and to our superb panellists Dr Sam Hart from Claritas, Rebecca Aldridge from Balance – Wealth Planning and Hannah Turner from Freeths LLP.
On Wednesday 6th November, I joined the NJLD at their AGM and Wind Down Wednesday evening at the Barley Twist. It was also a chance to say goodbye to Wesley Walton, as he makes his way to the Big Smoke. Wesley has been a key contributor to our events and sporting fixtures, in both cricket and squash as well as being on the society’s sports and social committee. Thank you, Wesley, for all your support, you will be missed, but make sure you pop in to say hello, when you are next back in town!
The charity fashion show at Stick and Ribbon was a great success. Thank you to the wonderful Sally and Ellie for co-ordinating the stylish looks on our models, Lauren, Debbie, Aldijana, Abbey and Deborah. They all looked stunning, and we managed to raise £175.00 for Lauren’s charity, Harmless.
On Saturday 9th November, I was invited to join Larken & Co at the Newark Rugby Ground to watch the game against West Bridgford. A fabulous lunch and afternoon of sport and a chance to sit next to former England International Dusty Hare. Sporting luck may not have been on Newark’s side as they lost to West Bridgford but, luck was certainly on my raffle ticket as I won first prize – a lunch table at another match in 2025!
The sub-committees have been busy meeting up to discuss their plans in 2025. We would like to welcome the new Property Chair, Fiona Moore in her role, watch this space for a property networking event invitation in February, as well as one for the Private Client members, hosted by chair Bindiya Patel.
The Education & Training Committee have also been busy judging final entries to the Kevin De Silva legal article competition and President’s Cup. In a catch up with Education & Training Committee chair, Helen Fanning to discuss the society’s competitions, we couldn’t resist a selfie with a snowman!
Thank you to all those that entered the competitions, and well done to the finalists.
The Kevin De Silva finalists, Elizabeth Cole from Gateley Legal, Harriet Boyle from Browne Jacobson and Bridget Umoru from OTB Legal, are invited to the Newly Qualified Solicitors and Tenant Barrister Dinner on Thursday 21st November, where the winning article will be revealed.
The President’s Cup finalists, Francesca Townsend from Actons and William Schlich from Geldards LLP will come together to negotiate their deals for their clients on Monday 2nd December.
The Hammond Cup is still open for entries, closing on Friday 21st February, so there’s still time to put your entry in for this prestigious advocacy competition.
So, what’s happening next?
As we are approaching Christmas at a rate of knots, we have the VIP Christmas Shopping evening at Paul Smith Designs on Thursday 28th November and then our evening at Copper on Tuesday 10th December.
Don’t forget that nominations close on 29th November for the 2025 Annual Awards, there’s still time to put your nominations in and make a difference to a colleague or team.
In the meantime, embrace the last few weeks of November and get ready to step into Christmas with our next bulletin – get those Christmas Jumpers ready for Christmas Jumper Day on 12th December and don’t forget to send in your pictures!
Best wishes,
