Michelle's News - June 2025

Since May, the diary has been buzzing with activity!

The month began with a meeting with Naomi De Silva to discuss exciting plans for the upcoming South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) event in collaboration with Browne Jacobson.

SAHM, running from 18 July to 17 August, is a UK-wide celebration that honours the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of South Asian communities. It aims to educate, commemorate, and promote intercultural dialogue, highlighting the deep connections between South Asia and the UK. More information on the event is to follow.

On Thursday 5th June, I enjoyed a double celebration—first at the Irwin Mitchell Office Launch Party, held at Cleaver & Wake, followed by a lively International Welcome Dinner with our guests from Karlsruhe and Ghent at Fothergills. The evening set the perfect tone for the weekend ahead.

We were back at Cleaver & Wake on Friday 6th June, to celebrate the Society’s 150th Anniversary Dinner. It was a truly memorable occasion, joined by many past presidents and distinguished guests. We were especially honoured to welcome HHJ Joseph KC, who delivered a captivating presentation on her latest book, Rough Justice, offering a powerful insight into the current state of the criminal justice system. The evening also premiered a special film to commemorate the anniversary of the society, with contributions from our past presidents.

Looking ahead, we’re gearing up for the Legal Walk on Wednesday 18th June. This year, we’re raising vital funds for the Nottingham Law Centre, which has recently faced significant funding cuts.

The Centre provides life-changing support to those in need—people like Ms W, who was living in a chip shop storeroom with her 10-year-old son in exchange for work. With no access to benefits or housing due to her immigration status, the Centre helped her resolve her status and secure a safe home. Her son is now thriving at school.

Or Mr B, who was at risk of losing his home after losing his sight and falling into arrears. Thanks to the Centre’s support, he secured additional benefits and kept his home.

Every day, someone walks into the Nottingham Law Centre to ask for legal assistance, not everyone is lucky enough to receive it, let’s hope with our fundraising efforts on the 18th June, we can make a difference!

We have also just released the details of PRIDE 2025, to find out more visit: Nottingham Pride 2025

So, what’s to come?

Don’t miss Compliance Breakfast meeting on Tuesday 1st July at Buckles Law and the Cyber Security Webinar on Thursday 3rd July, where we’ll explore the top threats facing the legal sector in 2025.

Plus, cricket season is in full swing, and we’d love to see more supporters cheering from the sidelines!
