I made the decision to join the Ghent Twinning Weekend for two reasons; to initiate my involvement in the Nottinghamshire Law Society, and to experience Ghent and the Twinning Law Society Event.
Prior to this event, I had no experience with the Nottinghamshire Law Society, and I did not know what to expect. A month after the event I am still incredibly grateful for the experience and the people I met.
It can be intimidating being new to anything. It can be even more intimidating when you’re new to a society whilst a trainee in the sector. When I first signed up to join the Twinning event, I was anxious, and unsure what to expect. All my anxieties were completely dismissed when I met the Nottinghamshire Law Society members in Ghent; they simultaneously reassured me that I was one of them, and that I could rely on and trust each of them.
The Twinning event started with an introductory meal at a fantastic brewery, and from there it was a non-stop weekend of tourism, laughter, and networking. The Ghent Law Society arranged for us to participate in tours of the city, enjoy many breweries, museum exhibitions, and of course, a legal seminar.
I am so grateful for my experience at this year’s Twinning event; I was able to explore the city of Ghent, make new friends (internationally and at home!), and find out that I really, really, like Belgian beer!
The memories from this year’s Twinning Event are something that I will hold onto for a long time. I would describe this weekend as being life changing, and thoroughly recommend that others join in with the subsequent Twinning Events.
