Changing the Narrative: World Suicide Prevention Day 2024

Every year throughout September, Harmless and The Tomorrow Project join with individuals and organisations around the globe to encourage everyone to engage in open and honest discussions about suicide and suicidal behaviour. Changing the narrative around suicide is about transforming how this complex issue is perceived and moving from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding and support.

Suicide is a major public health problem with far-reaching social, emotional and economic consequences. It is estimated that there are currently more than 700,000 suicides per year worldwide, and we know that each suicide profoundly affects many more people. Suicide remains a critical global issue, affecting individuals and communities everywhere. During 2022, the were 5,284 suicides registered in England alone.

Our awareness campaign focuses on World Suicide Prevention Day on 10th September, but the Harmless team will also be involved at numerous outreach events across the East Midlands during the month. Proactive engagement with the communities we serve is a vital part of our work and we are always particularly busy at this time of year. Additionally, during this period Harmless hosts an annual online Suicide Bereavement conference designed to help those working with anyone impacted by suicide. Led by experts in the field, it is an opportunity to gain knowledge, share experiences and learn new skills for practical implementation in real-life situations.

Throughout the month and beyond, we aim to show that talking about difficult feelings, including suicidal thoughts, doesn’t have to be intimidating. Every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a supportive and understanding society. By initiating these conversations, we can break down stigma and create better cultures of understanding and support.
