An Interview with Solicitor of the Year - Natalie Haydon-Yeung

❖ What does it mean to you to win Solicitor of the Year?

I was absolutely thrilled and shocked - all at the same time! I read the stories of the other brilliant lawyers who were also shortlisted, and I did not think that it would be me that would be walking away with the award. I am very grateful, and it was a perfect opportunity to get as many of the Team together as possible and to celebrate. We all had a wonderful evening!

❖ What changes would you like to see in the profession?

I think the legal profession has worked hard to ensure that there is greater diversity and representation from all communities especially in leadership roles. I would like to see this continue and the profession continue to work closely with aspiring students and lawyers from all backgrounds.

❖ Do you think there are barriers to entry in the profession?

Again, there is clearly a move forwards with various law firms launching different schemes to try and breakdown the barriers but, my view is that barriers do still exist. In terms of specifically, social mobility, over the years, I have worked with the widening participation teams at local universities speaking to many aspiring and talented students who wish to pursue a career in law. I have met many other equally passionate lawyers who also give up their time to speak to these students. I think this work is incredibly important to breakdown some of the barriers.

❖ Extra-Curricular work is very important to you, how do you manage that additional work load alongside your day-to-day responsibilities?

I think I now accept that some days I am better at managing than others! I do try to set aside some time in my calendar to make sure I can focus on what needs to be done. I am hugely passionate about all the projects I am currently working on which I think also helps as it keeps me motivated.

❖ Where do you see yourself in 5 years' time?

I was recently promoted to Partner in the Family Team. I hope that in the next five years, I can continue to grow within this role. Over the course of my career, I have also worked with and trained many aspiring and talented lawyers. I hope to continue doing this within my role

❖ Do you have any goals you would like to achieve in your career?

I do have a few in mind but my immediate goal is to settle into my newly promoted role.

❖ What else do you enjoy outside of the law and is it easy to have a work/life balance?

I have two young (and wild) boys, so I am often found going on long walks/outside with them trying to tire them out! I think having children / other family responsibilities can sometimes throw off the work/life balance. I do not think it is easy, but I think you learn – quickly – what works and what does not. I am incredibly lucky that I do work within a supportive team, and I have a husband who is also on hand especially when the juggle gets tricky.
