Round 1 of the 52nd annual Hammond Cup will take place on Wednesday 14th April 2021 and Thursday 15th April 2021, online.

The competition is open to trainee solicitors, paralegals and pupil barristers. For one year only the competition will be extended to those of 1-year PQE. This will allow those who missed out due to last year's competition to compete this year.  The Hammond Cup provides competitors an opportunity to practice their advocacy skills in a realistic court room setting, with feedback from experienced practitioners and professional judges.  This year the competition will be held online, this is no less realistic as it reflects current practice!

In round one, candidates will have the choice of whether to present a ten minute:

  • criminal sentencing exercise; or
  • civil application.

The judges will be looking for candidates who show clarity of expression, thoroughness and, of course, persuasiveness.

The four candidates with the highest score will be invited to participate in the final week commencing 19th April, provisionally on Wednesday 21st April 2021.  A panel of judges will score the candidates and decide on the winner of the Hammond Cup 2021.   Prizes will be distributed at the Nottinghamshire Law SocietyEach finalist will take the role of either the prosecution or the defence in a mock criminal trial with volunteers on hand to play the role of witnesses. A panel of judges will score the candidates and decide on the winner of the Hammond Cup 2018. Prizes will be distributed at theNottinghamshire Law Society AGM on Tuesday 27th April 2021.
